As a collective body of work, my research has examined the ways in which graphic design artifacts have contributed to the cultural and political identities of their makers and users, and informed changing identity patterns throughout Western history. Shortly after coming out as
a gay man while attending graduate school in the late 1980s, I became interested in learning
about the ways in which graphic design practices have contributed to the public’s perception of lesbian and gay cultures. My interest in lesbian and
gay identity models expanded to include questions regarding design’s role in the construction and maintenance of identity for other social groups. My recent book project, Indigenous Enlightenment: Printing and Education in Evangelical Colonialism, 1790–1850, was released by the University of Nebraska Press in December 2023.
